The longest day

Its the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere, a day which imperceptibly represents the pinnacle. On the other side of the world, the day is at its shortest, and in the darkness of winter, the deepest point has been reached. Soon both will begin to change, and day length will be traded. Equal and opposite.

As we are of the earth, we are like the earth. The fluctuations between the two poles of human experience, and every gradiation in between is a feature of a human experience.

Remember that like the earth, we rarely stay in one place for too long. Rejoice when it's time, and mourn when it's time. This too shall pass.

So I met up with an acquaintance, BL, for coffee on Saturday. A quick coffee, he says, 'cause we are both busy. I agree, a brief catch up will be good.  Interestingly, I don't really know BL that well. We've chatted a couple of times on the phone, and we are in the same leadership group. Something tells me this is going to be an interesting coffee, and I like the feeling of taking a risk. Consciousness upgrade

That one thing. The one thought that inspires a life time, a new tangent that makes a person see the world in a different way, a moment that lasts a lifetime. For me, it was sitting in a movie theatre watching “The Beach”. The characters, dismayed with a 'normal life', took to travelling in South-east Asia, seeking ever more exotic and remote destinations. In the end, they sought what I also sought – a deeper understanding of myself, a choice of action rather than a well run routine that had been prescribed and administered by a faceless yet ever present force.  I walked into the theatre with tunnel vision, focused on the next party, the next pay rise, the next weekend. I walked out with a wider horizon, hungry to see what the world had to offer and conscious that the limitations in my life were somehow self imposed.  People were out there, hungry for something different, something untouched, something pure and principled. Forget what you know, to see what is there

Take off. The power that is generated to hurl a rocket into space and escape the gravity of the earth is phenomenal. It was always considered impossible, but it has now been done. Many times. Some say arrogance, some say inspiration. Who cares if the motivation for some pioneers of space flight was arrogance.  When I see a huge metal bullet packed full of jet fuel hurtling through the sky and away from the earth, I am so inspired. This thing that I am totally connected with, that I live and breathe each and every single day, is no longer a constant. It is no longer the only thing that I can understand and comprehend. In that, thee is immense power and untold clarity. They say that the fish is the last to understand the water that it swims in.
